4月22日以来的起伏活动则主要集中分布在余震区的南端，5、6级余震空间集中区出现明显位置迁移现象。结合在该地区发育的多条北东方向平行展布的一组断层来看，此次7.3级地震及后续余震的发生，可能是区域多条断裂共同活动的结果。主震的发生，可能触发并激活了附近次级断裂的活动。
一次大地震发生后，余震活动会随着时间的推移，在强度和次数上逐渐减弱。从目前的活动特征来看，花莲7.3级地震序列仍处在起伏活动过程中，余震活动还会持续一段时间。
