“祖父留给我们的永恒形象，就是一名骁勇善战、终身恪守黄埔精神的爱国军事将领。”黄埔军校第一期学生陈明仁的孙女陈见苏日前接受中新社采访时，拿着一张祖父在黄埔时期身着戎装的照片说。
1924年，时年21岁的陈明仁毅然投笔从戎，辞去中学教师职务，怀揣家人借凑的30元银洋，从上海辗转到达广州，报考程潜任校长的大本营陆军讲武学校。
陈见苏回忆称：“当时陆军讲武学校招生已停止，幸运的是李明灏教育长特别关照，收录了祖父。同年陆军讲武学校与黄埔军校合并，祖父成为黄埔军校的第一期学员。”
“当时祖父看到黄埔军校大门上‘升官发财请往他处，贪生畏死勿入斯门’的对联，深受震撼。”陈见苏说，从此祖父决心终身恪守“天下为公，精忠报国，无私无畏”的黄埔精神。
1925年10月，为讨伐盘踞东江的军阀陈炯明余部，广州革命军二次东征攻打惠州。首日攻击受挫，次日陈明仁临阵受命，率领150名士兵继续攻城。他身先士卒，持枪登梯跃上城墙，英勇杀敌，率先将军旗子插上城头。陈明仁由此一战成名。
陈见苏指着一张陈明仁东征惠州战役的留影说：“这张照片上用中文和俄文记录了当时的情况，收录在当年随军苏联顾问白礼别列夫写的《惠城作战日记》书中。曾亲历惠州战役的周恩来在1949年9月会见祖父时说‘打下惠州城后，我和蒋介石都曾向你举枪致敬’。”
抗日战争时期，陈明仁历任国民党中将师长、军长等职。陈见苏说：“祖父的军旅生涯，最为辉煌的是抗日战争屡建奇功，为中华民族抵御外侮浴血奋战。”
陈见苏追忆，抗日战争开始时，祖父就在日记中写道：“余等军人早已抱定牺牲的决心。”从1938年到1945年，祖父参加指挥了武汉会战的九江战役、桂南会战、滇西反攻、柳桂反攻诸战役，立下赫赫战功，每战必捷。
其中，陈明仁在1945年1月8日至10日，统率中美陆空军三天攻克日军固守的回龙山，堪称中国远征军滇西反攻最畅快淋漓的一战，他因此被誉为“杰出的中国名将”，远在延安的毛泽东赞赏陈明仁此战为“战术杰作”。
1949年8月，陈明仁与程潜等人顺应潮流，毅然率部在长沙和平起义，为湖南和平解放奠定基础。陈见苏忆述，祖父陈明仁在率部起义前，还写下“舍小家为大家，个人生死，不加考虑”的豪言，并做了断子绝孙的准备。
1949年8月5日，毛泽东、朱德致电程潜和陈明仁：“此次两先生毅然脱离伪府，参加人民解放事业，大义昭著，薄海同钦。”
陈见苏忆述：“祖父一生恪守‘不计报酬，埋头苦干’的人生格言。1949年9月，祖父在北京参加全国政协会议，毛泽东主席两次接见祖父，问到‘你今后打算干什么，有什么条件吗？是从政还是带兵呢？’祖父回答‘我一点条件都没有，我还是带兵吧’。”
1955年，陈明仁被授予上将军衔，就任55军首任军长，是少有的上将军长。从1952年至1968年，陈明仁带领部队驻守湛江，担负边防守备任务。其间，55军修建铁路和海港，建水库凿运河，植树绿化，解决了雷州半岛十年九旱的难题，为湛江成为海滨花园城市作出了重要贡献。
“祖父终身恪守黄埔精神。他满怀着对海峡两岸同胞的思念之情，渴望两岸早日实现统一。”陈见苏说：“受祖父的影响，他的长子、也就是我的父亲陈扬钊考入黄埔军校第十九期。父亲生前是广东省黄埔军校同学会名誉会长，致力于推动两岸和平统一。1991年4月，还在广州接待了中华黄埔四海同心会名誉会长邓文仪。”
2019年10月1日，陈见苏受中央军委邀请，赴京参加新中国成立70周年阅兵庆典。她在致敬方阵上，举着祖父的戎装肖像，行经天安门接受检阅。
陈见苏认为，用“黄埔虎将”和“无私赤子”来概括自己祖父的一生最为贴切不过。“‘虎将’是评其功，‘赤子’论其人。”她说：“长沙和平起义后，祖父把自己所有的房地产和钱财，都无私奉献给国家和人民，是一个真正的无产者，他留给我们后代的是要自强自立的宝贵精神财富。”(完)
